Sweet November

Richard has made the rounds on the family blogging sites, but as November has come to an end, just one more visit from Richard. I feel sure that he can help me usher in the month of December in a healthy, happy manner.
Drive safe, don't stress out over the holidays, and eat healthy. Just another Public Service Announcement. Short and sweet.

Merry Christmas, teresa

October..the month kids get to eat candy!!

If you are a child, like my sweet niece Maggie, she knows what's ahead. The very last day of the month people give you bunches of candy and you are allowed to eat goodies galore. Hopefully, all respective parents will go through the candy methodically to pick out the candy they want to eat, I mean to insure it's safe to eat! I hope Maggie's "trick or treat" night is record breaking! Angie...save a snickers bar for me;-)

To my family, please get your passports. Chuck and I are applying for ours and I strongly urge you all to apply for your passport. The day you want to travel abroad you could be faced with NOT having the U.S. passport. The days are long gone when you could just run down to the post office and get a passport or walk across the border to Canada or Mexico. This is my Public Service Announcement for the month. Oh, and get your flu shot!

Passing of an era

The end of an era. The longest running Soap Opera in history of radio and TV "The Guiding Light" will come to an end this week.It started on radio. I didn't watch "The Guiding Light" and certainly didn't listen to the show on the radio in the '30's,but have been a loyal viewer to other soaps over the years. The most current is the "Young and Restless". And I was certainly sad when the quirky "Passions" was taken off the air. That was one of the best soaps just because it made fun of itself and had so many real movie stars in the show that had retired to the world of soaps. I predict in a few years the world of Soap Operas will have passed. I will always have good memories of the soaps..getting off the bus as young as 2nd grad to rush in to watch "General Hospital" with Dr.Hardy, nurse Jessie and secretary Jane, then later Blackie, the wedding of Luke and Laura, head over to "Days of Our Lives", with Marlena being possessed, Susan Delilah Banks and little Elvis(remember that wedding?),the crazy Roman-John Black story line. The "Edge of Night" was a good one."Dark Shadows" and Barnabus Collins, great T.V."Santa Barbara" where Robin Wright Penn got her start. The very short "Sunset Beach" with the Daschanel family. Susan Lucci a.k.a. Erika Cane, you deserved the daytime emmy years before you won the Emmy. You are so tiny, pretty, and a really nice person. Your storyline on "All My Children" at the beginning of the show was groundbreaking.
So much to talk about, memory lane with the soap stars! For the record they are the most beautiful people in the entertainment industry. Yes, this post appears shallow and that's because it is shallow. It's my blog and shallow is the word of the day.

August '09

A few thoughts as the month of August comes to an end.

Many birthday celebrations in August. Happy Birthday to all!

Memphis trip was too much fun. I'll take Memphis anytime of the year! I don't think I'll ever be able to participate in the vigil weekend again, so happy it was on a weekend this year. Next year will mark would have been Elvis's 75 birthday, hard to imagine Elvis at 75, so I won't even try. In addition to facts, places of interest, etc, I know to NEVER underestimate the power of an elderly woman, her pearls, and the smile that proved to be ever so deceiving, the kind people that gave way to her pretended act of weakness, soon learned the lesson...don't judge a book by it's cover or you won't get a good photo of the Peabody Ducks. The Historic Peabody Hotel is beautiful and worth another stay when we travel to the B.B.Q. cookoff, whenever that event takes place...stay tuned.

H1N1 flu. Pandemic ?,who knows, but take your tylenol, stay away from people, and don't believe everything you read or hear. Grow up people, be responsible, and you will make it through this until the next pandemic will by hyped, thus, another cycle.

I love the color green, but not the color of poison ivy as it invades my English Ivy. Suffering I can do with the best of them, but in reality I prefer not to suffer. It only takes a little poison to wipe out the complete patch of Ivy, good or bad, all must go,then we start over with something new. I am thinking..something stone...and a ficus tree in a beautiful green pot, where all of the ivy once grew, yes, that is what I am thinking. No action, just thoughts.

Come on in September. I am ready for you. It's Labor Day month. Take a day off to honor the work we do all year. Welcome September.

As the song says, "See you when September comes". t

Summer Lovin' Had Me A Blast

First up......love the movie Grease!
It's a summer full of celebrations, noted on the calendar provided to me by my sister a.k.a. Nana GJ. Thank-you. Love it.
Once again, fighting a headache. The fog of the migraine and what cures the ailment cause my brain activity to accelerate. Thoughts, reasoning, validation, concentration, everything is accelerated. Possibly not outwardly, but inwardly, sleeping or no, it's happening. It's a shame I can't come up with a productive cure for disease, famine, woes of the federal government. See where this is all going? Yes, it's there, but now focused on the events of the day. The Michael Jackson memorial in Los Angeles. It's really so sad for his mother. While issues must be ironed out, the family appears to be in complete disarray. But, that could be my migraine talking. I am not ashamed to admit I watch every minute of coverage, I bought the People magazine Michael Jackson special edition, thank-goodness for the "E" channel, etc. So, may Michael Jackson have the total peace he was denied of in our world.

So, as the saying goes.......let the picture paint itself. The summer of '09 will be over before I've completed my painting.

Vegetarian or Vegan

It would be very simple for me to become a Vegetarian with one exception. If I am going to take on Vegetarian platform I will feel tremendous guilt for not adopting the Vegan form of the lifestyle. I do not eat very much meat or fish ,so that's the easy part of the program. I do use cheese, milk, eggs, dairy products when necessary. The fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, squash are abundant now. Do I think this form of a diet is any healthier than one with meat, no. I believe portion control and basic common sense will tell me what is healthy and what is not. But once again, I will not claim to be an "active" Vegetarian, even though it would be easy. I am giving it some more detail thought. I could never have a complete organic diet, I don't believe that exist. I realize people will say the opposite, but I don't think anything can be 100% organic. I compare it to people that say a partial % of the proceeds of the purchase go to charity. Unless, they 100% it's a no go. I guess that is how I feel about the Vegetarian lifestyle....all or none.

Mother's Day and Elvis Week 2009

Wonderful Mother's Day. Ali,Tamara, and Mark came in for the weekend. They gave me the best gift I could ask for....a Sonic gift card! Yes, it's all I wanted and all I need! I have told them repeatedly not to give me anything I would need to dust, clean,or I don't need. Chuck gave me the prettiest hummingbird feeder with pre-mixed nectar, again, a perfect gift. We really needed a new feeder for the hummingbirds. The last "pretty" one didn't last too long. Although I must add that I don't expect a gift from him for Mother's Day as I am not his mother. But it is a much needed addition for the few hummingbirds we have. We recently moved the bird bath where we could enjoy watching the birds and they certainly have fun in the water.

We are headed to Memphis for the big Elvis weekend in August. Glenda and I will be able to take part in the candlelight vigil at Graceland in memory of Elvis' passing on August 16,1977. The vigil will start at 6p.m. on Saturday, the 15th, and end when the last person has entered the gate carrying the vigil candle. We plan to get in on Memphis action on Beale Street(birth of the blues),Sun studio, and ALL Elvis memorabilia available! I am planning a purchase of new sunglasses, yes, Elvis sunglasses. We are staying at the famous historic Peabody hotel with the equally famous ducks and their duck march. I feel sure Chuck and Dave will enjoy the blues on Beale in addition to all the other music on Beale Street. I hope the Neely's restaurant is not to far away. I love watching them on the food channel and their family BBQ is considered the best. Memphis doesn't suffer from a shortage of great food and restaurants,so here we come!

The family has abundant action this month. Angie,Doug, and Maggie are bringing us a new nephew this week. Tamara and Mark are making the big move to home owners, and a beautiful home it is.Chuck gave them our 9 ft Christmas tree since we have 8 ft ceilings. We have birthdays today, tomorrow, and soon Edward Mason will have a May birthday.

Anxious and waiting for Mason and Memphis, t

T's Got A New Ringtone

You must stay with the song a bit to hear the tag line. I don't think any of my group will disagree it's a great tag line for a song. I have always heard that people don't like country music because it tells the truth. Country, Folk, Indie, Americana,it's just the truth.

As May begins, I have birthdays, anniversaries, and the ANXIOUS wait for the newest edition to our family.....new nephew Edward Mason. So,Edward, let's get this party started!

Rebuilding Galveston

Hurricane Ike hit Galveston/Crystal Beach with full force. Seven months later you can't drive or walk in the area without hearing a nail gun or sight of a work truck. The residents are working to get Galveston back, better than ever.Seeing the water line on the buildings downtown with the name IKE scribbled above make what I consider downtown's latest "folk art". Beautiful old homes were still standing, not without blemish.Cruise ships coming into port.Great food on every corner with French/Spanish influence and the gift of fresh seafood at the doorstep of the chef.
Philanthropy is abound in Galveston. It was apparent. Reading short excerpts in magazines, names on libraries, streets, buildings, etc. I have some research to do. The Moody family, who were they? Who were the founding fathers of Galveston I need to know. Contributing to the Galveston economy is easy. Enjoy yourself.
"Gulf Breeze" is a reality. After the participants swam over a mile, biked over 56 miles, ran over 13 miles it was the macho men athletes that needed the IV fluids, not the 80-100lb women of strenth. We were there on a mission. Mission Accomplished!!

Time for your Easter bonnet, t

Hurricane Ike

DALLAS: Just watched the Weather Channel special on Hurricane Ike. The narrator kept saying, "September 13,2008,". My family and I were in Dallas for my niece, Autumn's wedding. Many people on the coast were trying to get rooms in the Dallas area.We had no problem in route to Dallas, everyone appeared to be heading North/NorthEast. We were earily alone heading west on I-20.Ali had driven up/evacuated from Baton Rouge, thankfully she had planned on attending the wedding. Tamara and Mark were given a mandantory evacuation in Ft.Bend County, thankfully they had already planned on attending the wedding. So, we had our evauation for Ike planned courtesy of Autumn and Morgan. Ali had just returned to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Gustav took Baton Rouge by storm. It was her first week back in school and they were already given another evacuation announcement. Her power had been restored and thankfully Baton Rouge did not suffer from the rampage another hurricane could bring.I don't think Mark's parents had power restored from Gustav by that date, but I assume they were thankful the trees missed their beautiful home during Gustav and Ike had not hit the city. If I remember correctly Tamara and Mark's power was restored by the time they returned home. They were so smart they emptied and packed up freezer items before they left they left. Mark, you get credit for getting it all together. FYI, always empty the freezer and refrigerator before evacuation. I do remember the schools being closed. It makes sense,so many employees commute. If they can't return home, how do you return to work? Having gone through the direct path of several hurricanes, vividly remembering Hurricane Carla,a Cat4, I have no problem heading north as soon as they recommend evacuation, I make reservations, arrangements, whatever it takes, I am on the road to a safe area. I did get report from Nana G.J. that Mama Teresa's Flying Pizza is gone, as is most of Crystal Beach and Port Bolivar. I was standing with Uncle Dave in one of turrets viewing the Dallas skyline, watching the wind and rain. We were so happy for Autumn and Morgan. They looked so beautiful together. Hurricane Ike didn't rain on our parade.

GALVESTON: Here we come in a few weeks to help rebuild the economy. We will enjoy the town for the weekend. Ali will participate in the LONESTAR Half-Iron. Go Ali! But props to the LONESTAR committee for having the event this year. It would have been so easy for them to say the area is not ready yet for the event. The event will bring people, their families, and friends to Galveston. We will eat out, shop, and cheer on our athlete. Moody Gardens(we have tickets to all attractions), Gaido's, the Strand, the Seawall, here we come! This will be a different visit than last year. So much has changed for Galveston and the southeast Texas coastline since Hurricane Ike. I look forward to visiting Galveston, the barrier island of my youth.

Galveston, oh Galveston,

Peace, Strange But True

Yes, I have walked the cemetery. Cemeteries are a peaceful place. I am graveyard person. It is a place where, well, it's the end for the physical life. I have noticed a sign for a cemetery and stopped just to look around and make up stories in my mind of the person on the headstone. I am not the only one to do this. I guess you could say I have a "graveyard fetish". As the Dave Matthews song goes,"gravedigger, when you dig my grave, could you make it shallow so I can feel the rain". No, this is not morbid, you Disney Lion King kiddos know it's the "Circle of Life" It does bring out the memories of Jacinto City, what little I can remember. I was born in the shipyard city, had my tonsils removed by "LOCO" doctor that delivered me.And a street named Navigation. As heading to the end there was a warehouse store named Coastal Salvage. What a place, scary but yet it had everything a ship could unload for a bargain price!

Traveling

After being on the road for various appointments and visiting I am home. Back at work and hoping for a quiet weekend. Made it to Tamara and Mark's home on Monday. I love the H.E.B. in Sugarland. A nice visit with them both. Tamara and I dined "al fresco" at Cafe'Express in the Sugarland Market area. A very nice evening to sit outside with good company and good food. Then headed off to medical center and was out of town without event by noon. Met up with Nana G.J. on the way home for another lunch outing at a quaint place,"Rao's".Once again, great company and a very nice, oh so chic lunch with my sister. We caught up,swapping items to spread around with the girls, then headed home.I was so happy to see a few Texas Bluebonnets popping up on Hwy.59! I made great time getting home driving the speed limit. We had hoped to make a day trip tomorrow to B.Rouge, but someones on call this weekend and it's not me. So, next week, we will take various items of need to B.Rouge.

FYI, a small request/notice of a family practice office employee, please be nice to the people that answer the phone, if you can understand some w/language-accent barrier. It will get you so much further in medical/insurance assistance you need. Oh, and get the name of the person you talk to...hey, they always ask, "who did you speak to?".

In a few weeks we will travel to Galveston/Moody Gardens to "spread the wealth" to the hurricane Ike battered town. Looking forward to seeing the area since such devastation.

Azaleas, bridal wreath, dogwoods trees are popping blooms everywhere, and that makes me very happy.

Have a wonderful weekend. t

Cautiously Optimistic.. Worse Before Better

Is this the catch phrase of the year? The sky is falling and apparently so is the NASDAQ, DOW, and all other financial woes I don't understand. I DO understand,if you don't need it, don't spend the money.Use cash..it's just a good practice to implement early on in the $$ trade. I suspect cash will be the "pink". For my readers that weren't born or are too young to remember the South suffered the fall of the oil and gas industry in the late '70's and it never did completely rebound. Add on a few years later the petrochemical slowdown. Of course there was no government bailout. I am not reading 800+ pages of a stimulus bill, but we will be okay, won't we? Remember to keep your sense of humor if you choose to listen to the talking political heads. You must have a sense of humor, I don't think they do.
So work hard and play hard. Board game playing is on the upswing, house entertaining with a card game or board game..back in the picture. Good times playing cards, dominoes, connect four, all the variations of Uno. Remember it can get competitive and that's fun. I think I'll take up player poker, next year I will be in the poker tournament at the Horseshoe!
Off to Houston Medical Center, stop off in Stafford Monday and Tuesday. Until then, but a $1 dollar lottery ticket, someone has to win!

WAR: Name a Worse Event?

19 and green with a new M-16 just doin' what he had to do.....(j.rich)

You would think it has to do with the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, but no, it was written about a soldier and battle in Vietnam. Does that make the pain of War different? NO! These poor, usually very young men and women give it all. And what do they get? Didn't the new President say he was going to order them home? The only exit plan we need is to leave. I say, bring them all home now. Don't wait for another American soldier to die in the name of another country and their religion. The American soldier will uphold his mission,no questions ask. Bring them safely home, it's the least we can do for them and their families. Don't make the families of the disabled veteran beggars, give them everything they have earned. Make the death benefit enough for a family to live on if the unimaginable happens. Go to the Wounded Warriors site and check it out.

It's not a pretty subject, but I ache for these families, I really do.

Thank the American soldier.Pray and pray again for the American soldier, t

Valentine's Day and Rain

It's raining and it seems appropriate. A rainy Valentine Day. When I awoke this morning there were beautiful yellow roses and stargazer lilies that I could smell from upstairs waiting for me in my favorite red vase. You know the one. The vase that says I'm for roses. Then a few other gifts. The kind of gifts or items I wanted but would not buy for myself, everyone has those little items of want. In the midst of the gifts was the Grammy award winning CD "Raising Sand". Of course Chuck could not wait to get his hands on it. He ask me if I knew "Please Leave the Letter" was a quasi Led Zeppelin song? Yes, I knew. I wouldn't think Robert Plant would make a CD without a song he wrote or co-wrote added to the mix. The neighbor brought over chocolate and hard candy. Everyone was called or called. It's just the day you say hey, love you.

Now, rainy days. You know all the songs about rain. Let's me see if I can name a few: Kentucky Rain, Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, I'm No Stranger to the Rain, I Can See the Rain, Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head, I bet you can name a few too. I feel like the rain is the gift to the plants and the great outdoors, they are thankful for the rain. Drinking it as if it were champagne for the day.

To those that read, I love you, have a wonderful evening. Watch your favorite show, snuggle with a good book, make a toast with something sparkling, eat ice cream, chocolate or in my case a "sweet tart"!

Old Dogs

Tom T.Hall wrote a great song decades ago with the line "old dogs, children, and watermelon wine", a little diddy about the good things concerning getting a little older or should I say mature. I thought of it when the 10 year old dog won Best In Show at the Westminster Dog Show in NY last night. How great is that? Even better was the name,Stump. Great name! He appeared to be a natural redhead. I hear it's a proven fact that redheads get better with age.

Winter Work Days and Winter People

Winter days are probably the best days to work, for me. I don't like winter/cold days. So, I should be at work everyday and get these days behind me and look forward to spring and summer. I am already looking forward to spring. The sight of a flower or a green leaf and the sun is shining for me. Winter comes and goes and is necessary, I get that part. It's just the inconvenience of winter. Usually a coat or jacket, you never know. If I dare pack for a weekend trip, well, I just unpack and stay at home. So when daylight savings time rolls around the phrase"spring forward" makes me feel good, real good.

Winter people, acquaintance, friends. What are they you ask? Well, I have a self-made theory. There are winter people, acquaintances, and friends in our lives. When winter people come around basically it's the same feeling as a bluesy winter day,the kind of day you can't trust. You always hope the winter person will be a spring person, but alas, not so. It's still a winter day. You thought you were headed for spring or summer, but winter crept back in for one last winter blast of wind. Yes, you can have a winter visit in the dead heat of summer. Most of you are great, wonderful and multi seasonal people, you are very fortunate.Don't change,it's good you're that way. It's no secret I don't like winter and what it brings. This year, March 20 spring begins officially. Let the tulips soon be in full bloom, until then I am driving going to drive to work through the garden district to look for those early herbs and flowers that are trying to get out of the ground to the spite of old man winter.Mother Nature protects them from winter, just as I would protect my child that might go out without a coat in winter. Just as I will continue to protect myself from winter people.

Once again, just the simple ramblings of spring person....yes, I have been color analyzed, and I am a spring.

Springing forward, t

Inaugurations

My favorite true TV is a court trial that shows Lady Justice at work. My second is the Inauguration Day events. There are more prayer breakfast, brunches, lunches, dinners than I want to count. It's a little too much to believe they couldn't come up with big meal like the Indians/Settlers did called Thanksgiving. But then all of the photo ops would be lost. I watch to see the people, who gets to sit or stand, what they will be wearing especially at the balls tonight. The TV media anchors and pundits are repeating themselves and don't even know it. Patting themselves on the back, they are an obvious group.Trying to make us believe the are informing us of something they know when the info is getting fed to them via an earpiece. Now, so far in the "good" seats you have Steven Speilberg, Dustin Hoffman, Muhammed Ali, Jerry Brown(still a nut),Magic Johnson, just a few in the "good seats". The media is calling this area the V.I.P. area. I understand these make enormous donations to the campaign, so I just can't help but believe you buy your seat if you aren't a member of the Supreme Court, Senate, former President or a family member. If you are a hard right winger, don't watch, it will upset you. Right wingers this is not approved for you. They should put a warning on the coverage.

The most moving/touching part of the day for me is when the then former President gets on Marine 1 from the Lawn, waves goodbye and goes home. Actually they go to a hangar where a plane will carry the former President and a plane filled with devoted staff members, friends, and family to the state they call home. Today flying to Texas.

I am going to sign off to watch the events of the day. I had a closing thought, why don't they give the men and women of the Armed Forces the V.I.P. seats? They give the ultimate. But as I said earlier in the post your healthy donation guarantees your V.I.P seating and the Armed Service men and women get paid less in this country than teachers.

First Ladies

I feel compelled to write a second post tonight.

In my opinion, Texas has produced the most gracious, elegant first Ladies of the United States. If you read about Lady Bird she was a spitfire, standing up and for the President in a time of war. Laura, beautiful Laura. Always handling the interview appropriately. Defending the office and the President during a time of war. Watching Larry King tonight, she is an obvious tough cookie. These women were and are women of strong character. Not just a wife of a President, strong willed, opinionated women. When you drive through Texas in a few months remember Lady Bird. When she flew into Austin in route to meet a friend she noticed the wildflowers, thus her platform and cause started before she was first Lady. She graduated high school at age 15. Marshall High School. Who knew what was ahead for her. Laura, she was born to be first Lady.

Once again, these women that prove a Texas woman is not a woman to underestimate.. Don't try to play games with the first Ladies that hail from Texas .The "Eyes of Texas" are upon you!

Instincts Won't Fail You

Learn:

During the Christmas holidays I received a call at work. My co-worker ask me to work for her,her exact words were, " if you could work for me tomorrow I will work for you any day,i mean any day." Sweet lady so I said yes, knowing it was a Friday and those are notoriously bad days in a family practice m.d. office. My instinct was to say no,but I didn't. I said yes. Today I called to ask if she could work for me tomorrow, I am fighting a headache and know I must be there on Thursday for class on the new system. My instincts were correct, exact words,"any day but tomorrow,I have to go to my....".Lesson, say no when your instincts or gut say no.
I don't want to give the wrong idea about this person, she is sweet and good "Bible Belt" church goer. She avoids conflict but on the other hand does not remember until she will need me to work for her when one of her great grandchildren or grandchildren
arrive unexpectedly in town. I'll remember though. If you read this, you know I don't forget and the one thing I have on my side of the brain that works is a quick trigger when needed.
On shallow subjects. Dr. Phil is discussing gender identity. Now,what is that really ?Didn't Auntie Noxie and Aunt Vida get all of that straightened out for us? I am using their dictionary. Their "instincts" were spot on!

In and out of the fog of migraine meds I thought of the line in a song that always stops me in my tracks. Hank Williams wrote beautiful songs, but the line..."The silence of a falling star lights up a purple sky. And as I wonder where you are I am so lonesome I could cry". Tortured genius,yes..did you know that his wife Audrey booked the shows, played the shows, and paid the bills? She deserves credit too. Hank Jr. always gives her credit. Good boy, shout out to your mama.

Remember girls, always trust your instincts, if you have the gift of discernment it's an even stronger responsibility to yourself.

A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GLENDA JOAN!! It's your birthday!! love, t

ELVIS

January 8Th, Elvis' birthday. He would have been 74. I am writing today about Elvis. Watching the specials around the day he was born is a tradition in my house. I know my sister does the same,we remembered him together this year.

What stands out about Elvis in the recordings is the fact he didn't have or need the technology artists use today when performing. He didn't have the little earpiece in his ear so he could hear himself, he just sang and performed. He had it all. Other than the fact the industry really didn't take him serious, he had it all. He was a giver and not a taker. His loyalty to the Colonel was unparalleled by today's standards.

I saw Elvis in 1970 at the Astrodome. Nosebleed section, a sell out. Something I learned this year was that he sold out 6 performances at the Astrodome the year he performed. He wore a white jumpsuit with a pastel/white tasseled belt, simple compared other jumpsuits in his collection. I remember looking through binoculars seeing the Sweet Inspirations and the Jordanairres with him. He circled the stadium in a convertible before and after his performance.

Next year will be 75 and I will watch the specials on him just as I have every year. I will watch as if it is breaking news, like it's the first time I have ever watched. If you have never watched an Elvis special check out the "comeback" special of '68. It's my personal favorite or listen to him sing "Love Me Tender". Learn to appreciate a real entertainer that loved his audience and they loved him.
